A Very French Poster

Between January and March of 2013 I studied abroad in Lacoste, France with other SCAD students. The students put on an exhibition at the end of our time and I designed the poster to promote the event.

The challenge was to design something to draw visitors to our small village while also representing each major present that semester - Illustration, Sequential Art, Writing, and Art History. I went through lots of ideas and decided on the one that captured our experiences as students and would appeal to the rural French population.

 The final design hit many chords. The Tin-Tin like figure resonated well with the locals (Tin-Tin is very popular in France) while simultaneously representing the students’ experiences (Lacoste is a village of many steep hills and we often lost our

The final design hit many chords. The Tin-Tin like figure resonated well with the locals (Tin-Tin is very popular in France) while simultaneously representing the students’ experiences (Lacoste is a village of many steep hills and we often lost our footing on those cobblestones). The poster was selected out of several student submissions by the campus director and many copies were printed and posted up in the surrounding areas. It was exhilarating to see my work all across Provence, and extremely validating to hear how a second print was needed after locals kept removing posters to take home for themselves.
